A Reminder Of the NCAA Qualifying Times; A Cuts Are Lightning Quick
When the NCAA released its qualifying times for the 2022-23 Division I season, the speed necessary to nail down an A Standard was eye-popping. Take the men’s 50-yard freestyle, for example. The A Standard in the sprint event is 18.88, which is nearly a second faster than the B Standard of 19.82. As for the women, it will require 58.10 in the 100 breaststroke to pick up an automatic bid.
Once the conference championships are held next month, it will be interesting to see how many automatic standards are registered. Certainly, it has been a fast dual-meet season, including an NCAA record from Arizona State sophomore Leon Marchand over the weekend.
The University of Virginia is the two-time defending NCAA champ on the women’s side, and the Cavaliers feature another stacked roster that will try to make it a three-peat for coach Todd DeSorbo. On the men’s side, Cal and coach Dave Durden unseated Texas at last year’s NCAA Championships and will try to repeat.
This year’s edition of the Women’s Championships will be held from March 15-18 at the University of Tennessee while the NCAA Men’s Champs will be held from March 22-25 at the University of Minnesota.
