NCAA Men’s Championships: Youssef Ramadan Gets First Win For Virginia Tech: ‘Finally My Time’
NCAA Men’s Championships: Youssef Ramadan Second Fastest Ever in 100 Butterfly: ‘Finally My Time’
The 2023 NCAA Division I Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships continued on Friday with the finals of the 100 butterfly.
It was a battle of the young upstart, the veteran and the defending champion.
It was the veteran, Virginia Tech’s Youssef Ramadan that became the second-fastest ever, winning the NCAA title in the 100 fly.
“After three years – finally,” Ramadan said. “Finally, this is my time. I have been saying my time would come for so long. To be the first one for VT means me so much. They had faith in my and I am super happy that I won for them. I am overwhelmed.”
The upstart, Florida freshman Josh Liendo led at the halfway point of the race but heading into the final turn, Ramadan had moved in front, making his move at the opportune time. He continued to build that lead and got to the wall in 43.15, the second-fastest performer in NCAA history after Caeleb Dressel.
Ramadan has been in the mix for an NCAA title for the past three years.
“I felt strong at the end and had faith,” he said. “They have so much faith in my so it would be a shame to come here and be scared and not fight. There were some points where I was scared. People were faster than me and had more experience than me. I had faith in myself and I knew I had my team with me and my home (in my heart). So I was on fire on the block.”
Ramadan won in 43.15 ahead of Liendo (43.40). Indiana’s Tomer Frankel was third in 44.04 ahead of defending champion Andrei Minakov (44.27) of Stanford.
Tennessee’s Jordan Crooks, the 50 free champion, was fifth in 44.29, followed by NC State’s Aiden Hayes (44.35), Nyls Korstanje (44.86) and Kacper Stokowski (48.27).
