NCAA Men’s Championships: Nick Albiero Leads 200 Fly Prelims; Urlando, Julian Also Under 1:40

The second-fastest man in history in the 200 butterfly and the defending NCAA champion in the event had no trouble in earning lane four in the evening’s final, which will be the last individual swim of the meet. Louisville fifth-year swimmer Nick Albiero swam a 1:39.22 in prelims, 1.3 seconds behind the 1:37.92 he recorded at the ACC Championships last month to move behind only Texas’ Jack Conger on the all-time performers list. Albiero blasted a 51.50 split on the back half to propel him a half-second ahead of the field.

Georgia’s Luca Urlando qualified second in 1:39.79, and Cal’s Trenton Julian claimed the third seed in 1:39.87. Urlando was in the water for the first time since setting an American record in the 100 backstroke at the end of Friday night’s session leading off the Bulldogs’ 400 medley relay. Urlando has previously placed third in the 200 IM and second in the 100 fly (by less than a tenth) this week, and he will be in action in the final of his best event Saturday evening as he aims for his first NCAA title.

Julian, meanwhile, will again race in the 200 fly after he led for almost the entire race at last year’s NCAA Championships. He was actually ahead by more than a half-second with 50 yards to go before Albiero surged ahead with a 25.85 split.

Indiana’s Brendan Burns, the runnerup in the 100 back, took fourth in 1:40.07, just ahead of Georgia Tech’s Christian Ferraro (1:40.10). Arizona State’s Alexander Colson (1:40.40) and Kentucky’s Mason Wilby (1:40.45) placed sixth and seventh, respectively, while Cal freshman Gabriel Jett took eighth in 1:40.63. The freshman edged out NC State’s Aidan Hayes (1:40.66) by three hundredths for the last spot in the A-final, and he continued the momentum of a huge morning for Cal. The Bears finished with seven A-finalists, while no other team picked up more than four spots in championship finals.
