NCAA Men’s Championships: Leon Marchand Leads Way Again in 200 Breast
Stop me if you’ve heard this before, but Leon Marchand won a swimming race Saturday morning.
In this case, it’s just the preliminaries of the 200 breaststroke at the 2023 NCAA Men’s Championships, with a pool record of 1:49.64. The NCAA record holder in the event is chasing his third individual crown this weekend.
Both he and Texas’ Caspar Corbeau were under the pool mark, set in 2018 by Ian Finnerty of Indiana. Corbeau is the second seed in 1:49.89, a nice coup for Texas in the title race.
Three-time reigning 100 breast champ Max McHugh is the third seed for his valedictory swim after a 1:50.64. He was just ahead of Andres Puente Bustamante of Texas A&M, with Florida’s Aleksas Savickas also under 1:51. Carles Coll Marti, who was fourth last year, nudged into the A final in eighth.
All three team title contenders have one swimmer in the A final and one in the B. Marchand is joined by David Schlicht in 11th. Jake Foster slid into 16th to accompany Corbeau. Jason Louser of Cal was seventh with teammate Reece Whitley 10th.
