NCAA Men’s Championships: Indiana goes 1-2-7 to Dominate 3-Meter Diving

The Indiana Hoosiers knew that if they were going to hang in the team race, diving would be a huge factor.

On Friday at the 2025 NCAA Division I Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships in Federal Way, 3-meter diving was a huge factor.

Indiana placed three in the finals, and nearly went 1-2-3, finishing 1-2-7, led by repeat champion Carson Tyler, and scoring 49 points for the Hoosiers, bringing them back into team contention just behind second-place Cal.

“We were just kind of trying to rally around each other and motivate each other in the moment,” Tyler said.

Tyler, the defending champion, started strong and threw down some 9s and a 10 in round four to lead at 319.30, six points ahead of teammate Quentin Henninger.

In the fifth round, Henninger scored 71 points. on an inward 3 1/2 somersault tuck.

Then Tyler did the same dive and got an 81.60 to give him 400.95, a 16-point lead over his teammate going into the final round.

On his final dive, Tyler was in third and needed a strong dive to earn the win.

He scored a on the forward 4 1/2 somersault tuck. He was off on his approach but managed enough to win with a score of 467.45. He needed 65 points and got 66.

“It is a newer dive and I felt like I needed a good dive. I was super anxious and I got to the end of the board and I was way on the end, but I did my flips, landed on my head and it all worked out,” Tyler said. “This means a lot, especially doing it with these harder dives that will be big moving forward on the international level.”

Henninger finished with a forward 4 1/2 somersault tuck and got 81.7 points to put him in second place with 466.15 points.

“It felt like we were building off of each other the entire meet,” Henninger said. “It felt like a group effort. I felt pretty good. No big misses and that is what I was going for.”

They weren’t the only Hoosiers having a great day on the boards.

Maxwell Weinrich finished with a forward 2 1/2 somersault with two twists in the pike position and nailed it. He finished with 389.20 points to take sixth.

“I look up to these guys so much. I am so happy to be in a final with them and put up some points for IU,” Weinrich said. “It was a great day. Last year I got in the B final and I was super happy to get in the A final. I was a little juiced up on my fifth-round dive, but all and all it was a good day.”

Stanford’s Jack Ryan scored 83.60 on the final dive to finish with 457.90, ahead of Texas freshman Jacob Welsh (395.95) and USC’s Shangfei Wang (393.10).

“That is one of the reasons I started using harder dives. The competition keeps pushing the boundaries and it is cool to see the sport move in that direction,” Tyler said.
