NCAA Men’s Championships: Ilya Kharun Edges Dare Rose in Epic 200 Butterfly Finish
The 200 butterfly was expected to be a battle and it lived up to the hype.
In one of the few races not to be a record-breaker, it was perhaps the closest race outside the 50.
Arizona State freshman Ilya Kharun came away with the victory at 1:38.26 after a stunning surge in the final 15 yards to overtake Cal’s Dare Rose (1:38.61).
“I felt like I had to win it for my team – and I just love winning,” Kharun said. “There is definitely a lot of pressure, but you have to think of it as another meet and doing it for your team. We knew the points throughout the meet mattered. I had to go out and stay ahead of the boys. I knew I had a pretty good back-half, and that I could hold them off.”
Kharun was at 21.71 to lead after the first 50.
Rose took over the lead at 46.84 at the halfway point.
At the 150, Rose still was barely ahead of Kharun and kept the lead off the final turn, but in a late burst of speed, Kharun took the lead in the final 15 yards to earn the title in 1:38.26, just fourth tenths of a second ahead of Rose.
NC State’s Aiden Hayes finished third in 1:39.16, followed by Indiana’s Tomer Frankel (1:39.35), Cal’s Gabriel Jett (1:39.72), NC State’s Noah Bowers (1:39.94) and Michigan’s Gal Groumi (1:40.05).
Indiana’s Brendan Burns made it back to the A final in both of his events of the night, impressively finishing his career as an All-American in both the 200 backstroke and 200 fly in the same session.
He finished eighth in the 200 fly (1:41.73).
