NCAA Men’s Championships: Five Individual Events Friday Morning (Heat Sheet)

After an exciting Thursday evening finals session at the NCAA Men’s Championships in Atlanta, competition will resume Friday morning with qualifying heats in the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke. All three individual winners from Thursday, Georgia’s Matt Sates, Arizona State’s Leon Marchand and LSU’s Brooks Curry, will be in action once again.

The day will open with the 400 IM, where Marchand will be chasing Chase Kalisz’s NCAA and U.S. Open records while hoping to fend off Texas sophomore Carson Foster. Meanwhile, defending NCAA champion Bobby Finke will be racing in the first heat as the last seed in the event, but he will undoubtedly be in the mix for the A-final.

Stanford’s Andrei Minakov is the top seed in the 100 fly, and he’s followed by Virginia Tech’s Youssef Ramadan and Georgia’s Luca Urlando. Urlando was impressive in placing third in the 200 IM final Thursday, and he is much better in the butterfly races. The 200 free, meanwhile, will see top seed Grant House of Arizona State, defending champion Kieran Smith of Florida and 2021 runnerup Drew Kibler of Texas all aiming to hold off Sates after his incredible performance in the 500 free final.

Minnesota’s Max McHugh should be in the drivers’ seat to win a second consecutive national title in the 100 breast, while the 100 back features a long list of contenders, with top seed Brendan Burns of Indiana leading the way. Cal’s Bjorn Seeliger, NC State’s Kacper Stokowski and Florida’s Adam Chaney all swam historic performances leading off their teams’ 200 medley relays on Wednesday, while another Cal Bear, Destin Lasco, posted an impressive performance for second place in Thursday’s 200 IM.
