NCAA Men’s Championships: Cal’s Jack Alexy Leads Loaded 100 Freestyle
The 2023 NCAA Division I men’s championships continued from Minneapolis with the prelims of the 100 freestyle.
LSU’s Brooks Curry is the defending champion in the event. Cal’s Bjorn Seeliger and Stanford’s Andrei Minakov were the next two and are back this season as well. In fact, seven of the eight finalists from last year are in the field again, adding a close and familiar feel to the event.
In the first circle-seeded heat, Cal’s Jack Alexy used a late burst to pass Florida’s Josh Liendo. Alexy finished in 40.88, while Liendo was 41.25.
The second circle-seeded heat saw Tennessee’s Jordan Crooks use closing speed to get to the wall in 40.92 just ahead of Brooks Curry in 41.17.
In the final circle-seeded heat, Virginia Tech’s Youssef Ramadan, who won the 100 butterfly on Friday night, used a late burst to win the heat in 41.15. Cal’s Bjorn Seeliger was next in 41.17.
Alexy took the top overall seed with a 40.88, followed by Crooks (40.92), Ramadan (41.15), Seeliger and Curry (41.17), Liendo (41.25), Indiana’s Van Mathias (41.33) and Ohio State’s Ruslan Gaziev (41.34).
Florida’s Adam Chaney won his heat with a 41.75 that got him into the B final.
Luke Hobson of Texas, who has won the 200 free and 500 free already this week, was strong from an early heat, along with NC State’s Nyls Korstanje, but it wasn’t quite enough to make the top 16.
