NCAA Men’s Championships: Cal Makes Move With Jett, Rose Top Seeds in 200 Butterfly
The final prelims session of the 2023 NCAA Men’s Division I Swimming and Diving Championships concluded with the 200 butterfly.
Indiana’s Brendan Burns, who won the 100 backstroke on Friday night, is the defending NCAA champion in the 200 fly.
Burns was in the second of the circle-seeded heats. He used a strong last wall to win the heat just ahead of NC State’s Aiden Hayes.
In the final heat, Cal’s Gabriel Jett scorched a 1:39.71 and teammate Dare Rose was just behind at 1:40.00, taking the top two seeds for the final in what could be a pivotal event for the Golden Bears in the team race.
Cal is in a three-way battle with Texas and Arizona State for the overall team title. Each team has their own strength and tried to make a move on the final morning. This was part of Cal’s push.
Jett took the top seed in 1:39.71, followed by Rose (1:40.00).
Arizona State senior Alexander Colson was third in 1:40.43, followed by Burns (1:40.51) and Hayes (1:40.56).
NC State’s Noah Bowers took the sixth spot in 1:40.82, followed by Indiana junior Tomer Frankel (1:40.94) and Michigan’s Gal Groumi (1:41.39).
