NCAA Division III Championships, Night 4: Denison Claim Women’s Title; Emory Surges Late to Take Men’s Crown
The Denison women’s team had a relatively quiet third day of the NCAA Division III Championships on Friday, not scoring in two of the early events. But the Big Red’s depth, and its renowned distance prowess, leaves plenty of opportunity to strike big when they have the chance.
With the mile starting Saturday’s final session at the Greensboro Aquatic Center and the 400 free relay capping it, Denison put itself in position to win its second national title, joining the 2001 crown.
It would take until breaststroke for the men’s team race to be decided, and only then with a stellar showing from Emory wresting a back-and-forth duel away from Kenyon to claim their second consecutive national title.

Men’s 1,650 freestyle
For a second straight year, it’s a Johns Hopkins mile sweep. Kellen Roddy repeated as the 1,650 champ in 15:15.86, nearly 10 seconds quicker than his seed time (though 2.5 slower than his winning time last year). It was still more than three seconds clear of Washington University’s Mason Kelber. Connor Vincent of NYU finished third.

Men’s 100 freestyle
Kenyon wins the battle, but Emory might have taken a step toward winning the warm.
Djordje Dragojlovic won the 100 free for the Lords in 43.32 seconds. But Emory extended its lead atop the team standings by finishing third, fourth and sixth.
Nick Goudie led the way in 43.58. Pat Pema was fourth in 44.44, tied with Calvin’s Jacob Heeres, and Colin Lafave was sixth. That bodes well for the 400 free relay which could decide the meet, though Kenyon had swimmers finish ninth (Cherantha De Silva in 43.84) and 11th in what sets up a tremendous finale. Emory leads by 10.5 points in the team competition.
TCNJ’s James McChesney, the 200 free champ, was the runner-up in the 100 in 43.46.

Women’s 400 freestyle relay
A safe finish is all Denison needed, and that’s what they delivered. The team of Tara Culibrk, Phoebe Ferguson, Esme Wright and Amber Croonquist finished third in a scintillating finale, two teams rallying past them on the final leg. Winning was Tufts, thanks to Lily Klinginsmith splitting 49.04 on the anchor to take them from third to first. She joined Claire Brennan, Katelin Isakoff and Jillian Cudney on the top step of the podium.
NYU finished second in 3:21.71, .12 up on Denison.

Men’s 400 freestyle relay
Kenyon took care of business in the final relay, but it was too little too late. The gold medal is fine consolation, though, Marko Krtinic, Daniel Brooks, Cherantha de Silva and Djordje Dragojlovic winning in 2:54.39, within a second of the record that has stood since 2012.
The University of Chicago finished second, already guaranteed to finish third in the team standings, and Emory glided home third in 2:56.87 to seal the national title.
