NCAA Division III Championships, Night 3: Three Men’s Records Fall as Emory, Kenyon Jockey
Three Division III men’s records went down on the third night of competition at the NCAA Division III Championships Friday. The more pertinent number is five: As in the number of points Emory lead Kenyon by heading into the final day of competition, the Eagles have leapt the Lords in the final relay to take the lead.
On the women’s side, Denison endured a quiet evening, but the Big Red still have a handy lead as they enter the final day of competition.

Kelly was third at the 100-yard mark, the top three separated by .17 seconds. She and Marshall were separated by .04 at 150 yards and then went stroke for stroke coming home. Kelly split 31.76 to Marshall’s 31.82 to get gold.

Connecticut College’s Justin Finkel made it interesting late with a feverish final 50 of 26.54, but he remained four tenths shy of Applebaum. Chicago’s Jesse Ssengonzi, the 100 fly runner-up, added another medal in third.

Men’s 100 backstroke
All eyes in the 100 backstroke were on Adam Janicki, after the MIT senior led off the 400 medley relay Thursday night by leading off in 46.43 seconds, a Division III record. But a repeat wasn’t to be, and instead, his record proved short-lived.
Whitman’s Tanner Fillion blitzed it into oblivion with a time of 45.75. It was seven tenths quicker than the time used to win it last year and lopped .68 off Janicki’s record.
Janicki would finish third, in 46.85. In between was John Carroll’s Liam McDonnell, who went 46.59. Kenyon boosted its point total with Djorje Dragojlovic in fourth, one of three swimmers in the top 11 and four in the top 15, enough to push Kenyon’s edge in the team standings to 62 points.

About that 62-point advantage … it evaporated quickly. Emory’s Jake Meyer made sure of that, leading four Eagles in the top six. He won gold in 52.87. Third was teammate Jason Hamilton in 53.26. Henri Bonnault grabbed sixth place. With Kenyon not scoring, the trimmed the gap to nine points heading into the relay.

Amherst’s Sydney Bluestein was just fourth in prelims but found something special to navigate to the top of a crowded finals field, scoring 431.40. That put her 1.6 points up on Emory’s Ariana Khan, in her bid to add a second diving gold of the meet, and just shy of four clear of Leah Levin of Ithaca. Chicago’s Veronica Fong was fourth. The top scorer from prelims, Ithaca’s Karalyn Pawcio, finished fifth in 418.50. Seven points separated the top four finishers.

Women’s 800 freestyle relay
We’ve yet to mention Denison on the evening, since the leaders were stuck on 281.5 points through the first two events, not scoring in either the 200 fly or 100 back. An eighth in the 100 breast and ninth in diving meant the Big Red still nursed a 44.5-point lead over Kenyon headed into the final swim of the night.
Any worry was emphatically dispelled in the capper of the night, Taryn Wisner, Esme Wright, Anna Pfeufer and Tara Culibrk winning in 7:16.35. Their winning margin was exactly 5.5 seconds over Tufts. The 40 points pushed their advantage to 58.5 entering the final day of competition, aided by Emory managing only fifth place and Kenyon a distant 10th.

Men’s 800 freestyle relay
A gold medal, a record, a lead … maybe more?
That’s what Emory finished the night with. The team of Nick Goudie, Benjamin Thorsen, Jason Hamilton and Pat Pema went 6:26.98, besting the field by three-plus seconds. They downed the meet and NCAA record set last year, with Pema, Hamilton and Goudie on that squad.
The 40 points, paired with Kenyon finishing sixth, have Emory five points up.
Washington University finished second thanks to four swimmers in the 1:37s. Garrett Clasen added another medal by helping Chicago finish third and keeping them nearly 100 points clear in the battle for third in the team standings.
