NCAA Division III Championships, Day 2: Jesse Ssengonzi Looking for 100 Fly Redemption

A year ago, the University of Chicago’s Jesse Ssengonzi was involved in one of the most dramatic finals of the NCAA Division III Championships.

In his signature event, Ssengonzi had won the 100 fly title in 2022 in a meet record, usurping NCAA record holder David Fitch of Kenyon. As the reigning champ last year, Ssengonzi set a meet record in prelims that was .01 off Fitch’s NCAA record but was beaten at night by Kenyon’s Marko Krtinic from an outside lane.

Thursday at the Greensboro Aquatic Center, Ssengonzi is looking to remove the drama from proceedings early. He set the top seed in the morning in 46.56, and watched his antagonist last year, Krtinic, fall short of making it back even for a B final.

Ssengonzi is one of three Chicago A finalists in the event on the second day of the meet.

Men’s 400 individual medley

Ryan Higgins led the way for TCNJ with a time of 3:52.42. His 3:50.53 seed time was the quickest of the participants in the race. Higgins finished 10th in this race last year.

He’ll contend with three returning A finalists. Washington University’s Daniel Sibley was second last year. He’s the sixth seed tonight in 3:54.20. The third seed is last year’s bronze medalist Benjamin Thorsen of Emory. Ethan Manske of Kenyon was fifth last year and fifth in prelims, in 3:53.69.

Added to the mix is Coast Guard Academy’s Sean Lyman, who went 3:52.57 for the second seed. He was 24th in this race last year.

Women’s 400 individual medley

The 400 IM offers three chances for redemption. The top seed is Trinity sophomore Neely Burns, who went 4:21.51 to secure the middle lane. She was last year’s silver medalist. The second seed, Jordan Herrera of Kenyon, went 4:22.39. She was disqualified in prelims last year. Also DQed last year, in the B final, was her Kenyon teammate Sydney McCallie, who pushed into the A final in seventh in 4:24.96. Kenyon has three A finalists, including Gabriella Wei in eighth, making the A final of this even for the third straight year.

The third seed is Quinn Weygandt of Swarthmore, who went 4:22.45. Denison has a pair of A finalists in Esme Wright in fifth and Tara Witkowski in sixth. They finished in the reverse places in the final last year, Wright finishing sixth each of the last two years.

Jesse Ssengonzi looked head and shoulders above the field, not for the first time in a prelims. He went 46.56 to scare his meet (46.47) and David Fitch’s NCAA (46.46) records. He’s more than a half-second up on teammate Cooper Costello, the second seed in 47.20.

Ssengonzi is the only holdover from last year’s A final, with most of the B final being promoted. Avery Clapp of Johns Hopkins was third in 47.27. He was 14th last year. The fifth seed is Frank Applebaum of CMS, who finished 10th last year and fifth in 2022. Ryan Soh of Emory (11th in 2023) and Michael Kohl of Trinity (16th) both bumped up, as did Ssengonzi’s teammate Garrett Clasen, who was seventh in prelims after winning the B final last year.

Those steps up came at a cost. Leo Han was eighth last year and 14th in prelims. Neil Mortimer, who finished sixth last year, ended up outside the finals in 18th place. And Marko Krtinic, the reining champ, was 1.49 seconds slower than his seed to finish 21st in 48.66.

A little less drama here, where last year’s silver medalist and 50 free runner-up Alex Turvey is after gold. The was seven tenths clear of the field with a time of 53.57 in prelims, already entering as the field’s only sub-54 time. The senior from Pomona-Pitzer finished 12th as a sophomore.

She’ll have medal company in a veteran-laden final. Samantha Kilcoyne of Williams is the second seed in 54.31. She finished fourth last year and is in her third straight A final in this event, as is fourth seed Emma Pritchett of Denison. Last year’s bronze medalist went 54.96 in the morning. Calvin senior Maggie Farrell, who finished seventh last year, was third in prelims in 54.86.

Men’s 200 freestyle

James McChesney is chasing a second straight title, and he gives TCNU two top seed. He went 1:36.44 in prelims to grab a middle lane. McChesney was fourth in this event in 2022.

Past performance is no guarantee, as Nick Goudie of Emory found out. The bronze medalist in 2022 and fourth-place finisher last year missed the A final, in 10th.

Chasing McChesney is Colin Twiss. The Coast Guard Academy swimmer went 1:37.00 for the second seed, .23 seconds up on Washington & Lee’s Dalton Jobe. Twiss was 12th last year.

The only A final repeat other than McChesney is Oliver Schalet of Williams. Eighth last year, he was fourth in prelims in 1:37.54, tied with Pomona-Pitzer’s Tag Curwen, who finished 16th last year. The winner of last year’s B final, Justin Finkel, just scraped into the A final in 1:37.78, despite entering the meet with the fastest seed time (1:35.69).

Women’s 200 freestyle

Kaley McIntyre is looking to repeat again, the 50 free champ grabbing the top seed in 1:47.34. The sophomore from NYU was 1.33 seconds clear of runner-up Emily Harris of Denison in prelims. Harris had been 14th last year.

The A final features three freshmen, led by MIT’s Ella Roberson in fourth in 1:49.96. Also under 1:50 is Emory senior Penelope Helm in 1:49.78. Helm was 17th last year. The lone A final holdover other than McIntyre is Grace Wenger of Bates, in sixth in 1:50.54.

Among those missing out is last year’s runner-up Taryn Wisner, who finished 29th in prelims. Kristin Cornish of Johns Hopkins, who was fifth last year, ended up 21st in the morning.
