NCAA Division II Championships Day 1 Prelims: Queens Earning Several Top 3 Seeds

The NCAA Division II Swimming and Diving Championships kicked off from Greensboro, N.C., with the men’s and women’s meets beginning with Day 1 prelims.

The events on the docket for the first day are the men’s and women’s 200 IM, 50 free and 1,000 free.

NCAA Division II: Women’s 200 IM

Indy fifth year Marizel Van Jaarsveld took the top seed in the 200 IM, dropping two tenths from her seed time.

She touched the wall in 2:00.12 to hold off Drury senior Bec Cross (2:00.26) and Nova Southeastern senior Celina Marquez (2:00.33).

NCAA Division II: Men’s 200 IM

Queens senior Alex Kunert took the top seed in the men’s 200 IM, dropping more than a second from his seed time to touch the wall in 1:44.25.

He was nearly two seconds ahead of the rest of the field.

Delta State senior Emanuel Fava took the second seed in1:46.19, followed by Simon Fraser senior Collyn Gagne (1:46.38).

NCAA Division II: Women’s 50 Free

Queens junior Danielle Melilli took the top seed in the 50 freestyle, finishing in 22.33, a three-tenths drop from her seed time and four-tenths head of the field heading into finals.

Lynn sophomore Luna Mertins took the second seed in 22.72, just one hundredth of a second ahead of Queens junior Monica Gumina (22.73) as Queens took two of the top three seeds.

NCAA Division II: Men’s 50 Free

Drury sophomore Karol Ostrowski took the top seed in the men’s 50 freestyle, leading a finals field that all touched the wall faster than 19.7.

Ostrowski touched the wall in 19.30 to claim the top seed, four hundredths of a second ahead of Queens sophomore Matej Dusa (19.34), followed by Queens senior Skyler Cook-Weeks (19.37) as again, Queens took two of the top three seeds.
