NCAA Division I Women’s Champs: Arizona Wins First NCAA Team Title

COLUMBUS, Ohio, March 22. WITH the 27th NCAA Division I Women’s Championships in the bag, the University of Arizona stood on top of the podium for the first time in program history. Overall, Arizona finished with 484 points to give head coach Frank Busch his first career national team title. The triumph gave Busch Coach of the Year honors.

The victory returned the title to the Pacific 10 Conference for the first time since 1998, when Stanford ended its run of seven team titles in 10 years. Ironically, current Auburn head coach Richard Quick helmed that Cardinal team a decade ago.

By the end of the meet, Arizona walked away with seven of the event titles. On top of the relay sweep (only the second time in NCAA history behind Georgia’s sweep in 2005), Arizona picked up wins in the 100 free from Lacey Nymeyer and 50 free from Lara Jackson.

Florida’s Caroline Burckle captured Swimmer of the Year honors for her run of two titles including her feat of taking down Janet Evans’ NCAA record in the 500 free.

Ohio State head diving coach Vince Panzano earned Diving Coach of the Year accolades, while the Diver of the Year title was shared by the triumvirate of Ohio State’s Chelsea Davis, Hawaii’s Emma Friesen and Miami’s Brittany Viola.

With the completion of the meet, Stanford pushed its NCAA record to 123 individual/relay titles, while Florida pushed its tally to 84 for second all time. Texas (69) and Georgia (52) owned the next two spots, while Arizona jumped up to 38 total national crowns.
