Texas’ Will Licon definitely proved to be a dragon slayer this week as he took down another American record holder to win the men’s 200-yard breast at the NCAA Division I Men’s Championships.
Licon already upset Chase Kalisz in the 400-yard IM last night, before dethroning American-record holder Kevin Cordes tonight in the 200-yard breaststroke.
Licon threw down a 1:49.48, overtaking Cordes down the stretch for the win. That edged Licon’s prelims swim of 1:49.54 that put him second all time behind Cordes’ 1:48.66 from last year.
Cordes touched just .10 seconds behind with a second-place time of 1:49.53, while California’s Chuck Katis bettered his third-ranked lifetime best of 1:50.71 from prelims with a 1:50.54 for third overall.
Georgia’s Nic Fink also joined the 1:50 club that previously only included Cordes, Licon and Katis as Fink posted a 1:50.80 for fourth overall.

Heading into the 200-yard breaststroke, Texas officially clinched the team title as no set of scoring from here on out can keep the Longhorns from winning with a 448-346 lead over California.
