Ohio State’s Mike Peppe previously held the record for the most men’s NCAA coaching titles with 11, and now Reese has tied him. Peppe served as the first swimming and diving coach at Ohio State from 1931-63. Reese, meanwhile, has coached the Texas Longhorns since 1978.

Georgia’s Matias Koski won the men’s 1650-yard freestyle with a superior final 500 yards at the NCAA Division I Men’s Championships.
Koski, who trailed Michigan freshman PJ Ransford by about half a pool with 500 yards to go, turned on the jets to win the event in 14:32.38. That’s the fifth victory for Georgia in the event’s history.
Other Georgia wins:
2006 Sebastien Rouault, Georgia, 14:29.43
2008 Sebastien Rouault, Georgia, 14:26.86
2009 Troyden Prinsloo, Georgia, 14:30.91
2012 Martin Grodzki, Georgia, 14:24.08
With the Georgia women putting up the top team finish ever without winning an individual or relay last week with a second-place effort behind California, Georgia’s 20-year streak of winning a title in either the men’s or women’s event was in jeopardy after two days without a Georgia win.
Koski kept that streak in tact.
Ransford, meanwhile, went out with the 10th-fastest 1000-yard free of all time with an 8:46.40 before settling for second overall in 14:34.36. That’s a 12-second drop for the rookie.
Northwestern’s Jordan Wilimovsky placed third overall with a 14:36.64, while Utah’s Bence Kiraly snared fourth with a 14:41.86 from the earlier heats.

Men’s 200 back
California’s Ryan Murphy swept the backstrokes in style with an NCAA and American record in the men’s 100-yard back at the NCAA Division I Men’s Championships.
Murphy unloaded a winning effort of 1:36.77 to clear Ryan Lochte’s American record of 1:36.81 set back in 2007. He also broke his NCAA record of 1:37.35 set a year ago.

Men’s 100 free
Alabama’s Kristian Gkolomeev joined Alabama assistant coach Jonty Skinner as an NCAA victor in the 100-yard free at the NCAA Division I Men’s Championships.
Gkolomeev put up a top time of 41.56 for the win, just the second time a man from Alabama has won the title in NCAA history.
The other man happens to be Skinner, who claimed the title back in 1975 – 40 years ago. Skinner put up a 43.927 for the win back then.
Gkolomeev tied with Arizona’s Brad Tandy for the 50-yard free title last year, and can now lay claim to a title of his own this year.
Gkolomeev moved up to ninth in the all-time history of the event with his swim.
NC State’s Simonas Bilis placed second in 41.78, while Southern California’s Cristian Quintero took home third overall in 42.18.

Men’s 200 breast
Texas’ Will Licon definitely proved to be a dragon slayer this week as he took down another American record holder to win the men’s 200-yard breast at the NCAA Division I Men’s Championships.
Licon already upset Chase Kalisz in the 400-yard IM last night, before dethroning American-record holder Kevin Cordes tonight in the 200-yard breaststroke.
Licon threw down a 1:49.48, overtaking Cordes down the stretch for the win. That edged Licon’s prelims swim of 1:49.54 that put him second all time behind Cordes’ 1:48.66 from last year.
Cordes touched just .10 seconds behind with a second-place time of 1:49.53, while California’s Chuck Katis bettered his third-ranked lifetime best of 1:50.71 from prelims with a 1:50.54 for third overall.
Georgia’s Nic Fink also joined the 1:50 club that previously only included Cordes, Licon and Katis as Fink posted a 1:50.80 for fourth overall.

Men’s 200 fly
Texas’ Joseph Schooling upset a pair of record holders to win the 200-yard fly tonight at the NCAA Division I Men’s Championships.
After taking down the 100-yard fly last night, Schooling swept the butterfly events with a time of 1:39.62 for the win. That moved Schooling to third all time in the event’s history. He just so happens to have beaten the two ahead of him.
The top 200 butterflier of all time, Jack Conger of Texas with a 1:39.31 during a time trial at Big 12s, took second tonight in 1:39.74. Michigan’s Dylan Bosch, who owns the NCAA record with a 1:39.33 from last year, took third in 1:40.12 in what proved to be an exciting final.
All Time 200 Fly
[table “” not found /]Schooling is just the second Longhorn to ever win the 200 fly as Rainer Kendrick was the first with a 1:54.97 in the 200-meter fly back in 2004 – 11 years ago.

Platform diving
Purdue’s Steele Johnson became the first man since 2009 to win the platform and a springboard event in the same year at the NCAA Division I Men’s Championships.
Johnson collected 532.70 points to add to his win in the one-meter on day one. He joins fellow Boilermaker David Boudia, who won the three-meter and platform events in 2009.
Indiana’s James Conner, an Australian Olympian, took second overall with 514.80 points, while Minnesota’s Matt Barnard claimed third overall with 473.80 points. Arizona’s Rafael Quintero snared fourth with 471.30 points.
Both Johnson and Quintero had perfect 10 dives during the finale.

Men’s 400 free relay
Southern California edged NC State for the men’s 400-yard free relay title to close out the NCAA Division I Men’s Championships.
USC’s Cristian Quintero, Santo Condorelli, Ralf Tribuntsov and Dylan Carter put up a time of 2:47.06 for the victory. Meanwhile, NC State’s Ryan Held, Simonas Bilis, Soeren Dahl and David Williams took second in 2:47.14.
That’s just a .08 second difference, but doesn’t break the NCAA record for the closest 400-yard free relay in men’s NCAA history.
Texas downed Auburn in 1981 by just .03 seconds, 2:54.84 to 2:54.87.
California’s Tyler Messerschmidt, Seth Stubblefield, Fabio Gimondi and Ryan Murphy earned third overall in 2:48.15.
That’s USC’s ninth victory in the 400-yard free relay.
