NCAA Div. III: Hope Sweeps Alma
ALMA COLLEGE, Mich., Jan. 11. THE Flying Dutch women’s team improved to 6-2 on the season with a 150-92 triumph over Alma College while the Flying Dutchmen gained a 118-81 win to move to 4-3 on the year.
In the women’s meet, Hope had two double winners. Senior Erin Vandenberg won the 100 freestyle (:56.60) and 200 freestyle (2:00.67) while freshman Meagan
O’Neil captured the 200 individual medley (2:15.93) and 100 butterfly (1:01.79).
Hope’s only double winner in the men’s meet was freshman David Ornee in the 1,000 freestyle (10:26.61) and 100 backstroke (:56.92).
Junior Michelle Smith set an Alma pool record in winning the 500 freestyle (5:11.41).
Other Hope winners in the men’s meet were junior Jeff Seymour, 100 freestyle (:50.74); junior Brad Norden, 100 breaststroke (1:10.77); sophomore Matt Cook, 200 freestyle (1:52.10); senior Brian Slagh, 50 freestyle (:22.47); junior Chris Hamstra, 100 butterfly (:56.10) and senior Dan Bouwens, 500 freestyle (5:08.93).
Other Hope winners in the women’s meet were junior Jennifer Strach, 100 breaststroke (1:15.12); sophomore Saran Smith, 50 freestyle (:26.25); freshman Melissa Erickson, 100 backstroke (1:06.89) and junior diver Lindsay Close on the three-meter board.
