NCAA Div. I: Washington Sweeps Utah
SALT LAKE CITY, Jan. 11. BOTH Utah’s men’s and women’s teams lost to the nationally-ranked Washington Huskies on Saturday. The men fell by a score of 120-101 while the women lost 125-90.
The Ute men won 6 of 13 events and were led by two-event winner Jonathan Larsen who won the 50 free (20.93) and the 100 free (45.86). Cody Rempfer won the 200 butterfly and Eric Jorgensen was a winner in the 1000 free (9:51.98). Utah’s record is now 5-5 and the men will not have a meet again until Jan. 24, when they will swim against Wyoming.
On the women’s side the 400 free relay team consisting of Neringa Statkeviciute, Kristen Kaiser, Loren Sweny and Amber Walker won with a time of 3:35.38. Ariane Kich was a winner in the 200 breast with her time of 2:25.91. The women only won 4 of 13 events and their record now falls to 7-6, they will resume the conference slate on Jan. 16, at Colorado State.
“We fought hard but it just wasn’t enough,” comments Head Coach Michael Litzinger. “The women were exhausted from last night’s meet. Overall we swam well. They just swam faster.”
