NCAA Div. I: Texas A&M Sweeps dual meets
COLLEGE STATION, Texas, Nov. 3. THE ninth ranked Texas A&M men's swimming and diving team defeated the Nebraska Cornhuskers by a score of 166-127. The Texas A&M women's swimming and diving team defeated the
University of Arkansas by a score of 90.5-49.5 and defeated the University of North Texas by a score of 103-37.
The men began the meet with a first-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of Riley Janes, Nik Tate, Michael Greene and Michael Colligan took the event in a time of 1:30.60. In the 100-yard backstroke, the Aggies took the top three spots with
freshman Matt Rose taking first (50.04), Janes taking second (50.28) and sophomore Patrick Kennedy taking third (51.64).
In the 200-yard butterfly, seniors Devin Howard and Greene took first and second place. Howard, a native of Klein, Texas, swam a time of 1:51.17, while Greene, a native of Ogden, Utah, swam a time of 1:53.07. Once again, A&M took the top three spots in the 50-yard
freestyle. Janes took first (20.79), Colligan second (21.04) and Rose third (21.12).
David Morrow, a senior from Norfolk, Neb., swam to a first-place finish in the 100-yard free with a time of 45.11. In the 200-yard back, Kennedy took first (1:51.91), while teammate Josh Hill took second (1:52.69).
In the 100-yard fly, Greene took first place in a time of 49.81 and Morrow took second with a time of 51.31. In the final event of the meet, Kennedy, Janes, Kehlenbach and Morrow took first place in the 800-yard free relay with a time of 6:51.17.
In diving, junior Jesse Even swept both events. Even, a native of Willis, Texas, scored 297.30 on the one-meter springboard and 322.12 on the three-meter.
On the women's side, Kimarie Durso, a junior from Dallas, Texas, took first place with a time of 10:22.65 in the 1000-yard free. Junior Michele Riggins swam a time of 1:52.11 in the 200-yard free, good for a first-place finish. Riggins, a native of Glendale, Ariz., also took first place in the 500-yard free with a time of 5:02.71, while Shannon Steel took second (5:06.80).
Sophomore Amy Osmun took first place in the 100-yard back with a time of 58.40. Teammate Kathy Barris was right behind Osmun with a time of 59.75. It was a repeat performance in the 200-yard back, with Osmun taking first (2:05.22) and Barris taking second (2:09.60).
In the 200-yard fly, freshman Katy Lietzau took first place with a time of 2:04.34. Lietzau, a native of Austin, Texas, also took first place in the 100-yard fly (57.79).
Sharisse Blau, a sophomore from Mesa, Ariz., continued her hot streak with a first-place finish in the 50-yard free (23.81) and first place in the 100-yard free (51.72). In the 200-yard individual medley, Steel took first place with a time of 2:09.87.
On the boards for the women, junior Meghan Zack took first place on both the one- and three-meter springboards with scores of 267.82 and 294.60, respectively.
The men now move to 3-0 in dual meet competition and the women move to 4-0 in dual meet competition. Next, the Aggies will host the Texas A&M Invitational in the Student Rec Center Natatorium, Nov. 16-18. The women will face Kentucky and SMU, while the men will face
Kentucky, SMU, Penn State, Auburn, Stanford and Purdue.
