NC State Picks Up 2020 Verbal From Virginia Gators Freestyler Nick Lawson
NEW COMMIT: Salem, Va. native and high school junior Nick Lawson has announced his verbal commitment to NC State as a member of the class of 2024.
Lawson does his club swimming with Virginia Gators under head coach Doug Fonder and owns four Winter Junior time standards. He earned a pair of lifetime bests and recorded two top-20 finishes at Winter Nationals in December and capped off his long course season with fourth-place showings in the 400m/800m free at Virginia LCM Seniors.
Also competing for Strasburg High School, Lawson is a six-time Virginia 4A State Championship finalist. He placed second in the 500 free and fifth in the 200 free as a junior, fourth and ninth in those events as a sophomore, and third in both races during his freshman season.
He told Swimming World:
“I am very excited to announce my verbal commitment to North Carolina State University. Thank you to everyone who has helped me get to where I am now. I cannot wait to be part of such a great team! Go Pack.”
His best times include:
- 200 free – 1:40.30
- 500 free – 4:26.91
- 1000 free – 9:14.79
- 1650 free – 15:39.45
- 400 IM – 3:56.43
Although he’s not in scoring range just yet at the ACC Championships, he has made continuous improvements with 1.5 years of club swimming still to go before arriving in Raleigh. Over the past two seasons, he has dropped three seconds in his 200/500 free, 40 seconds in his 1000 free and nearly a minute in his mile.
