National Junior Teamer Brooke Travis Lends Verbal to Hokies
NEW COMMIT: In what is shaping up to be a stellar recruiting class, Virginia Tech has just received a new verbal commitment from Brooke Travis. She was recently named to the U.S. Junior National team for 10K Open Water.
Travis will join Hannah Virgin, Morgan Miller, Ashley Worden, Shelby Raber and Rose Pouch as members of the Hokie class of 2023.
Swimming year-round with Nation’s Capital under the legendary Bruce Gemmel, the Newark, Del. native is a four-time U.S. Open qualifier. At the 2018 Open Water Nationals in May, Travis finished 15th in the 10K (1:57.27) to be named to the U.S. National Junior Team in the event.
She has made great strides over the past season in the pool, shaving three seconds off her 500 free, six off her 1000, 19 from her mile, five in her 200 IM and seven from her 400 IM. She capped off a strong summer season with 100% best times at Junior Nationals and recorded an eighth-place finish in the 1500m free (16:53.49). She also swam her way to victory in the 200m back (2:18.58) at the Potomac Valley Senior Championships in July.
She told Swimming World:
“Super excited to announce my verbal commitment to Virginia Tech! Thank you to everyone that has helped get me to this point and make this opportunity possible. Can’t wait to be a Hokie!!”
Her best times include:
- 500 free – 4:50.46
- 1000 free – 9:52.41
- 1650 free – 16:21.36
- 200 IM – 2:04.78
- 400 IM – 4:20.45
Travis will add valuable depth to the Hokies’ distance group when she suits up for the 2019-20 season. She would’ve placed 12th in the mile and scored in the B-final of the 500 free at the 2018 ACC Championships where Virginia Tech finished third in the team standings.
