Nathan Adrian Takes 48.7 100 Free Win to Close Mission Viejo; Weitzeil Dips Under 54
Nathan Adrian won the men’s 100 freestyle on Sunday morning at the TYR Pro Swim Series with a 48.74 as the only swimmer to break 49 seconds in the heat. Reigning world champ Caeleb Dressel was noticeably absent from the heat as he had scratched this and the 200 IM, but his Florida teammate Eric Friese finished in second at 49.05 as the German native swam the second fastest time this season for a German.
Friese just finished 13th at NCAAs in the 100 free this year in his sophomore season.
Olympic relay favorites Michael Chadwick (49.62) and Dean Farris (50.29) placed fifth and eighth respectively as the United States have won the last three major titles in the 4×100 free relay, winning at the last two Worlds and at the 2016 Olympics. Russia had an impressive showing at its Nationals this week in Kazan, with three under 48 seconds to shoot a warning for the rest of the world.
Internationals Zheng Quah (49.30) and Dylan Carter (49.51) placed third and fourth as they represent Singapore and Trinidad & Tobago, respectively.
In the women’s race, Abbey Weitzeil was the lone swimmer to break 54 in the 100 free at 53.68 as her time is the second fastest any American has been this year. She won ahead of Katie Ledecky (54.22), fresh off her win in the 1500 as she could factor into the 4×100 free relay come this summer at the Olympics.
Olivia Smoliga, who scratched out of the 200 back to focus on this, placed third from lane 1 at 54.61 ahead of three-time Olympian Allison Schmitt (54.66).
Poland native Kasia Wasick was fifth at 54.68 ahead of France’s Beryl Gastaldello (54.78) as this was a very crowded field. All eight swimmers broke 55 seconds.

Hello…Weitzel does not have the fastest time of any American this year. How can you forget Torri Huske just swam a 53.46 a few days ago??
