A subpar result in last night’s 100 freestyle wasn’t weighing on Nathan Adrian’s mind in today’s 50 freestyle prelims at the FINA world championships. He made a big statement, though, qualifying second for the semifinals with a 21.73.
“I was certainly happy with that,” he said. “No complaints about dropping that (time). All I have to got to do is repeat, go a 21.7 again, and we’ll be in finals. Then, we can figure out how to go faster.”

Tying for seventh in the 100 free final didn’t motivate Adrian to swim fast in the 50 free, nor did he feel like the splash-and-dash was an opportunity to prove himself after last night’s swim.
The result was “certainly motivation to train for the 100 for next year,” Adrian said. “I don’t really need any extra motivation. We’re trying to win medals for Team USA. Anything extra might turn into anxiety versus motivation.”
