Monica McGrath is fulfilling her dream with her recent signing at Princeton University.
“Princeton has always been my dream school,” the DuPont Manual senior McGrath said. “Having the opportunity to be a part of a wonderful team and amazing school is truly unbelievable.”
McGrath, who also swims for the Lakeside Seahawks in Louisville, Kentucky, will add some depth to the Tigers in the freestyle events. Her niche as a distance swimmer makes her a valuable asset in Princeton’s quest to repeat as Ivy League champions.
She performed well at the Kentucky High School State Meet finishing third in the 200-yard free and second in the 500-yard free.
Her 4:49.74 500-yard free would have placed second at Ivy League Championships, 0.02 seconds behind first place finisher Virginia Burns. McGrath clocks a 10:05.75 in the 1000-yard free, which finishes just outside the Ivy League top ten. Her 1:49.90 200-yard free was fast enough to get her tenth at the meet. In the 1650-yard free, her 16:44.95 would have placed her in the “A” final.
Her long course times are equally as impressive:
Event Time
200 free 2:04.00
400 free 4:20.30
800 free 8:58.62
1500 free 17:33.67
McGrath is anxious to join the Tigers next school year, saying, “I can’t wait to go there in the fall!”
Coach Teeter knows a lot about distance events. Monica will do well there as well as get a great education.
