GREENSBORO – All eyes were on the middle of the pool through most of the final of the women’s 100 breaststroke at the USA Swimming, but the attention turned to lane two, where Molly Hannis snuck by the field to win her first national title.
The winning time of 58.46 was just a couple of tenths off the personal best for the Tennessee senior, but gives her a boost in her pursuit of an NCAA title. The race for second was tight, with Katie Meili just missing out on a second national title here with a 58.71. Micah Lawrence got under 59 seconds for the first time with a 58.90 for third place.
Danielle Hermann of Clovis (59.01), Kathryn Johnstone of Edinburgh University (59.77), Lilly King of Newburgh Sea Creatures (59.91), Andee Cottrell of Louisville (1:00.05) and Bronwyn Pasloski of Badger (1:00.13) rounded out the top eight.
In the B final, Miranda Tucker missed the 1:00 barrier by a slim margin, taking the win with a 1:00.01. It is a lifetime best by 1.3 seconds, which should give her some consolation. Emily Kopas (1:00.45) and Beatriz Travalon (1:00.62) were second and third.
Claire Conlon took the C final with a 1:01.48, with Jennifer Wilson placing second with a 1:01.79 and Jessica Khojasteh third with a 1:01.85.
