Missy Franklin Gets Married to Hayes Johnson
Four-time Olympic gold medalist and former world record holder Missy Franklin got married to Hayes Johnson over the weekend on September 14, 2019 in Missy’s home state of Colorado.
Missy Franklin’s Legacy
Franklin retired from the sport of swimming at just 23 years of age in December 2018, and is now starting her swimming after-life. She wrote a first-person letter to the sport of swimming when announcing her retirement, Franklin wrote:
“I began to realize that my greatest dream in life, more so than Olympic gold, has always been becoming a mom. Swimming had been such a huge part of my life for as long as I could remember, but it was not my entire life.”
Missy Franklin left behind an incredible legacy where she won six Olympic medals and sixteen World Championship medals. She won the 100 and 200 back at the 2012 Olympic Games when she was 17, breaking the world record in the 200 that would stand for seven years, having recently been broken by Regan Smith. Her 200 free American record in short course yards is still standing and is the oldest yards American record to date.
“Missy’s legacy extends far beyond her times and records in the water,” fellow Olympian Kara Lynn Joyce told Swimming World. “She has been a true ambassador to the sport and one of the best and most sincere teammates and friends I’ve ever had. I feel so fortunate that our paths crossed when they did in 2011 as we were both training for the 2012 Olympics.
“She has no idea how much her genuine positivity and spirit helped me through some of the toughest times I’ve faced as an athlete. Although we won’t see her racing in the water again, I know she will go on to have a greater impact in her next endeavors as well as become an incredible wife and mother.”
