Mireia Belmonte Wins Again; Albert Puig Tops Tight 200 Free Field in Spain
For her third win of the week at the Spanish Summer Open, Mireia Belmonte swam a 4:36.89 in the 400 IM. Catalina Corro earned silver in 4:41.98.
The men’s 200 freestyle was an unbelievably close race. Albert Puig won in 1:50.07, just .01 ahead of Miguel Duran in 1:50.08. Another mere .01 behind was Manuel Martin in 1:50.09.
Melani Costa stopped the clock in 1:57.78 to win the women’s 200 freestyle. Also under two minutes was Patricia Castro Ortega in 1:58.79.
B.K. Ortiz-Canavate won the men’s 50 breaststroke in 28.32, just ahead of Andrews Malconian with a 28.35. Jessica Vall won the women’s event with a 31.80, ahead of Maria Garcia in 31.88.
The men’s 50 backstroke champion was J.Miguel Rando in 25.46. He added that to his 100 backstroke title from yesterday. Marco Palacios touched second in 25.53, just .01 ahead of Juan Guiterrez (25.54).
Mercedes Peris won the women’s 50 backstroke with her 28.51. Duan Da Rocha, the 100 backstroke champion, dipped under 29 with a 28.90 and Fatima Gallardo stopped the clock in 28.98.
Konrad Cerniak added to his 50 freestyle win with a 52.31 in the 100 butterfly. Alberto Lozano registered a 53.18 for silver.
Judit Ignacio was runner up in yesterday’s 200 butterfly and she won tonight’s 100 with a 1:00.39. Carmen Balbuena finished second in 1:01.07.
In the men’s 800 freestyle Miguel Duran was the only swimmer under eight minutes with his 7:58.48.
