Minnesota’s Sarah Bacon successfully defended her 1m diving title on Thursday night at the 2019 NCAA Division I Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships in Austin, Texas. The junior broke the meet record with 363.20 points, taking down Cassidy Krug’s 361.55 mark from 2007.
Bacon is the first woman to defend this title in back-to-back years since Houston’s Anastasia Pozdniakova won in 2009 and 2010. Arizona’s Samantha Pickens won two titles but not consecutively, taking the 1m crown in 2013 and 15.
UCLA senior Maria Polyakova finished in second for the Bruins (346.90) with Texas junior Alison Gibson (338.65) in third in her home pool.
2018 3m champion Brooke Schultz of Arkansas was fourth at 334.35 while UCLA’s Eloise Belanger (320.80) was fifth.
LSU’s Elizabeth Cui (317.80), Florida’s Brooke Madden (314.55) and Kansas’ Vicky Xu (284.60) also competed in the championship final.
Minnesota now has three 1m NCAA titles as Bacon joins herself (2018) and Kelci Bryant (2011) as winners of the event for the Golden Gophers.
