Minnesota Leads Big Ten Rivals After Day One of Purdue Quad
Three Big Ten swim teams have traveled to West Lafayette, Ind., this weekend for a two-day quad meet, and in both the women’s and men’s competition, the Minnesota Golden Gophers have built early leads on Purdue, Northwestern and Iowa (women only).

The Golden Gopher women edged out Northwestern by 21-hundredths to win the 200 medley relay. Paula Rodriguez Rivero, Ava Goodno and Morgan Thomas were almost a half-second back before Hannah Cornish anchored in a blazing 21.91 to give Minnesota a 1:38.60 victory. Eliot Kennedy followed with a dominant win in the 1000 freestyle (9:40.52), and Rodriguez Rivero was the winner in the 100 backstroke (52.88).
Megan Van Berkom won the 200 butterfly (1:56.77) as well as the 200 IM (1:58.02), and she anchored the victorious Minnesota 800 free relay team, with Thomas, Mina Kaljevic andAnja Kaljevic swimming the first three legs on the way to a final time of 7:11.61.
Northwestern’s Ayla Spitz swam a swift mark of 1:44.96 to win the 200 free, and teammate Lindsay Ervin posted a time of 22.70 to win the 50 free. Iowa’s Olivia Swalley finished first in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.01). Purdue’s Sophia McAfee dominated diving, winning on 3-meter (349.05) and 1-meter (298.10).
The men’s team from Minnesota got rolling with Davide Harabagiu winning the 100 back (47.06) before Kaiser Neverman swam a mark of 1:42.66 to win the 200 fly. YuTong Wang finished first in 1-meter diving (356.05). Neverman, Bar Soloveychik, Tyler Hansen and Alberto Hernandez Garcia earned a commanding victory in the 800 free relay, touching in 6:28.17.
Purdue’s men got off to a hot start with Brady Samuels, Andrew Witty, Charlie King and Idris Muhammad leading the way in the 200 medley relay at 1:24.98. Samuels also won the 200 free (1:39.90) and 50 free (19.99). Purdue’s Max Miller won 3-meter diving (394.15).
Northwestern’s Andrew Martin won a tight matchup with Minnesota’s Soloveychik in the 1000 free, pulling ahead for good with just over 100 yards to go and winning in 8:52.28, with Soloveychik touching in 8:52.95. Tyler Lu won both the 100 breast (53.66) and 200 IM (1:46.78).
