NEW COMMIT: Springfield, Ill. native Megan Van Berkom has verbally committed to study and swim for the University of Minnesota beginning in the fall of 2020.

Van Berkom swims year round for the Springfield YMCA Swim Team under head coach Rob Busby and owns a trio of Winter Junior standards. The USA Swimming Scholastic All-American recently placed fourth in the 400 IM at Juniors West en route to setting a new Illinois State record for 15-16 year-old girls. A current junior at Glenwood High School, Van Berkom is a multi-time YMCA National finalist and earned gold in the 400 IM at Illinois Seniors.

She told Swimming World:

“I am so excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of Minnesota. From the first moment I visited the U of M campus and met the swimmers and coaches, I felt like I was home. It’s the perfect place for me. Go Gophers!”

Her best times include:

  • 200 IM – 2:01.69
  • 400 IM – 4:12.81
  • 100 breast – 1:03.64
  • 200 breast – 2:15.62
  • 200 fly – 2:03.42

Even with 1.5 years of club swimming still to go before suiting up for the Gophers, Van Berkom will make an immediate impact in their IM group. She would’ve scored in the B-final of the 400 IM at the 2019 Big Ten Championships where Minnesota finished fourth overall in the team standings.
