Mike Joyce Hired as Associate Head Swimming Coach at Minnesota
The Minnesota Swimming & Diving program will have a new face on its staff this coming season, as head coach Kelly Kremer announced Friday the hiring of new associate head coach Mike Joyce. The hiring is pending the completion of a background check.
“We are very excited to welcome Mike and his family to Minnesota,” said Kremer. “Mike brings with him a broad range of knowledge and experiences that will benefit our student-athletes greatly. We’re really looking forward to his arrival on campus.”
A now-former member of the University of Auburn coaching staff, Joyce will be joining the Maroon & Gold after three seasons with the Tigers. During his time in Alabama, Joyce helped coach 12 student-athletes to 36 total All-American honors, securing a 12th place team finish at the women’s 2019 NCAA Championships in the process. Among those 12 student-athletes were three who managed to nab at least six AA honors each (Falconer, 6; Fisch, 6; Tetzloff, 7) at the 2019 Championships, a feat which has eluded any Gopher since former Gopher great Terry Silkaitis earned six at each of the 2002-04 national championship meets. At the conference level, Joyce and the Tigers were able to tally a pair of top-six finishes at the women’s SEC Championships over his three years with the program, with three individual titles coming as a result.
“I am extremely grateful to Coach Kremer and the athletic department for welcoming my family and I to the University of Minnesota,” said Mike Joyce. “The ‘U’ is a world class institution both academically and athletically, and the city provides endless opportunities while having a college town feel. That really excites me.”
Before his tenure at Auburn, Joyce had spent time with a variety of other programs, including Arizona State University, Princeton, NC State and a number of club programs around the nation.
An All-American and two-time Olympic Trials qualifier, Joyce graduated from the University of Florida with his B.S. in Event and Recreation Management in 2011 before obtaining his Master of Education in Educational Leadership and Administration in 2015. In his time as a student-athlete with the Gators, Joyce earned a perfect four consecutive NCAA Scholar All-America and SEC Academic First Team honors.
“Coach Kremer is a class act, and has had much success during his time at Minnesota,” said Mike Joyce. “I look forward to partnering with him and the rest of the staff in order to build on that success and assisting him and the student-athletes to the best of my ability daily. Go Gophers!”
