Mireia Belmonte Wins Twice in Two Days at Spanish Open
Mireia Belmonte clocked an 8:24.77 to win the women’s 800 freestyle at the 2016 Spanish Open. Belmonte’s time stands as a new meet record. Only three seconds behind was Melani Costa in 8:27.09.
Belmonte returned the next evening for a winning time of 2:07.27 in the 200 butterfly. Judit Ignacio joined her under 2:10 with a 2:08.87.
Marc Sanchez also set a meet record with his 15:16.74 in the 1500. On his tail was Antonio Arroyo in 15:18.17.
Konrad Cerniak opened the second finals session in a 50 freestyle win. He stopped the clock in 22.26, over a half a second ahead of the next best finisher. Miguel Ortiz-Canavate touched second in 22.70.
Marta Gonzalez was the first of two women under 26 seconds in the women’s 50 freestyle. She touched in 25.56 while Fatima Gallardo finished second in 25.64. Lidon Munoz Del Campo finished in 26.00 for third.
In the men’s 400 IM Marc Sanchez touched first in 4:18.33, taking seven seconds off his prelims swim. In 4:19.00 Lluis Pons earned silver.
Carlos Peralta touched in 1:57.56 for gold in the men’s 200 butterfly as the only finisher under two minutes.
Gold in the women’s 100 backstroke went to Duane Da Rocha with a 1:01.53. Almost a second behind her was Mercedes Peris in 1:02.23. The men’s title went to J. Miguel Rando in 55.36.
