The Wisconsin Girls Division 1 High School Swimming state championships was highlighted by a number of close races. In many swims the state champion was decided by under a tenth of a second.
Middleton and Cedarburg swam ahead of the pack in the opening 200 medley relay. Chiara Pierobon Mays, Ally Silvestri, Gabriela Pierobon Mays, and Berkely Smith got to the wall first for Middleton in 1:42.92. Cedarburg’s Lille Hosack, Sophia Remington, Brigid Gwidt, and Katie Kubiak were second in 1:43.44.
Hosak, a Wisconsin Badgers commit, won the 200 IM in 1:58.13, lowering her own state record by over a second. Finishing second was Bay Port’s Emma Lasecki (2:02.98).
Two swimmers raced under 1:50 in the 200 freestyle. Menomonee Falls/Hamilton sophomore Cassie Stegner out touched Stevens Point senior Julia Stupar 1:49.77 to 1:49.78 for gold. Arrowhead senior Abby Cabush rounded out the podium in 1:50.60.
Stegner won again, once again by a narrow margin in the 100 free. She touched in 51.03 to Stupar’s 51.09. Brookefield Central senior Gwen Gustafson was third (51.41).
It was another touch out in the 50 freestyle. Grace Bennin of Verona Area/Mount Horeb stopped the clock in 23.27, just .01 faster than the 23.28 from Gustafson. Sun Prairie’s Sophie Fiske (23.51) grabbed bronze. Benin earned another gold in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:02.17.
Close finishes appeared to be the theme of the day. In the 100 fly Gabriela Pierobon Mays was first to the wall with her 55.04, just ahead of Lasecki (55.12) and Madison West’s Katrina Marty (55.32).
Neenah sophomore Av Osero broke through the 500 point barrier to win one meter diving with a score of 511.50.
Middleton went two for two on relay victories as the team of Cora Mack, Smith, Hannah Aegerter and Caroline Hippen turned in a 1:34.65 in the 200 freestyle relay.
West out touched Hosack 53.88 to 53.98 for the state title in the 100 backstroke.
Powered by a 48.38 anchor from Hosack, Cedarburg took the 400 freestyle relay in 3:24.46. Maya Novack, Erika Remington, and Brigid Gwidt swam the first three legs.
Middleton totaled 313.5 points for the victory. Cedarburg was second with 242 and Arrowhead finished third with 189 points.
