Michigan Wins 1st Big Ten Women’s Title Since 2004
The Michigan Wolverines won their first Big Ten women’s title since 2004 with an outstanding last day at the 2016 Big Ten Women’s Championships.
Michigan won with 1361 points, while Indiana took second with 1207.5 points. Minnesota (927.5), Ohio State (859) and Purdue (766.5) finished third through fifth.
It’s the first title for Michigan since the squad beat Penn State in 2004, 604.5-590.5.

Ohio State’s Lindsey Clary followed up her 400 IM victory with a win in the 1650-yard freestyle event. She clocked a 15:49.98 to break the meet and pool records. She downed the meet record of 15:51.20 set by Indiana’s Lindsay Vrooman back in 2013, while also beating Ashley Steenvoorden’s 15:55.78 facility record from 2009.
Michigan had a huge event with a 2-3 finish with Bi Yirong (15:50.56) and Gillian Ryan (15:59.35) downing the Indiana swimmers in the key team-battle races. IU’s Haley Lips settled for fourth in 16:01.67.
Michigan pushed its lead to 970-888.5 against Indiana in the 1650 free. Minnesota (676.5), Ohio State (620) and Purdue (551.5) rounded out the top five.

In another key battle, Michigan’s Clara Smiddy beat Indiana’s Kennedy Goss to the wall in the 200-yard backstroke. Smiddy won in an NCAA A cut time of 1:51.57 with Goss falling to second in 1:52.18. Ohio State’s Halime Zeren finished third in 1:54.52.
Michigan’s Gabrielle DeLoof (1:54.71) took fourth, while IU’s Marie Chamberlain wound up eighth in 1:57.35.
Michigan owned a 1050-968.5 lead after the 200 back. Minnesota (682.5), Ohio State (671) and Purdue (571.5) were the rest of the top five.

The Wolverines kept on marching to the team title with another victory in the 100-yard free.
Siobhan Haughey threw down a 47.71 to touchout 50 free winner Li Zhesi of Ohio State (47.72), as both cleared the NCAA A cut and broke the pool record of 48.08 shared by Stacy Busack and Ali DeLoof.
With her third win, Haughey becomes the first Michigan swimmer to pick up a trio of individual titles since Kaitlyn Brady in 2006.
DeLoof, meanwhile, took third overall in 47.96. Indiana’s lone swimmer in the field, Holly Spears, finished eighth overall in 49.77.
Michigan pushed its lead to 1138-1009.5 against Indiana. Ohio State (730), Minnesota (723.5) and Purdue (587.5) comprised the rest of the top five.

Indiana’s Lilly King moved to seventh all time in the 200-yard breast, while teammate Miranda Tucker (2:06.52) finished second for the Hoosiers.
King clocked a sizzling time of 2:05.58. It downed the meet record of 2:05.98 from Minnesota’s Haley Spencer in 2013, and eclipsed Tucker’s prelims pool mark of 2:07.63.
More importantly, King’s time jumped her to seventh all time. Only Emma Reaney (2:04.06), Breeja Larson (2:04.48), Kierra Smith (2:04.56), Rebecca Soni (2:04.75), Caitlin Leverenz (2:04.76) and Laura Sogar (2:05.04) have finished faster.
Purdue’s Emily Fogle raced her way into third in 2:08.07, while Michigan’s Emily Kopas (2:09.48) and Carolyn McCann (2:12.22) collected some important team points with fifth and seventh-place efforts.
Michigan remained in the lead, 1217-1069.5, against Indiana. Ohio State (778), Minnesota (757.5) and Purdue (617.5) held steady in the top five.

Indiana’s Gia Dalesandro hit the wall in 1:54.77 to win the 200-yard fly, while Minnesota’s Danielle Nack took second in 1:56.55. Wisconsin’s Dana Grindall placed third in 1:56.60.
Michigan remained in the lead with 1234 points. Indiana held second with 1132.5 points. Ohio State (798), Minnesota (785.5) and Purdue (663.5) stayed in their respective positions.

Michigan put an exclamation point on its first Big Ten team title since 2004 with a pool record time in the 400-yard free relay.
Siobhan Haughey (48.22), Clara Smiddy (49.21), Gabrielle DeLoof (48.72) and Ali DeLoof (47.66) raced to a 3:13.81. That swim cleared the 3:14.53 set by Minnesota back in 2009.
Penn State (3:15.88) and Ohio State (3:16.65) took second and third.
