Michigan Swimming Announces Recruiting Class of 12

The University of Michigan swimming and diving program announced the signings of 12 prep standouts to National Letters of Intent for the 2019-20 season. The newest Wolverines include swimmers Christian Farricker (Cos Cob, Connecticut), Megan Glass (Cincinnati, Ohio), Sophia Kudryashova (New Providence, N.J.), Cam Peel (Spring Lake, Michigan), Kaitlynn Sims (Montgomery, Texas), Katii Tang (Hong Kong), Andrew Trepanier (Lakeville, Minnesota), River Wright (Attleboro, Massachusetts) and Noah Yarian (Fort Wayne, Indiana), as well as divers Lauren Cheetham (Lewis Center, Ohio), Anna Hansen (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Lucy Hogan (Evanston, Ill.).

Cheetham specializes on the one- and three-meter springboard events. She’s qualified for three consecutive USA Diving National Championships, making the final on one-meter in 2016 (14-15 Girls). At the 2018 USA Diving Zone C Championships, she made the final on both springboards, finishing seventh on one-meter (16-18 Girls).

Farricker is a mid-distance swimmer who specializes in the freestyle and individual medley events. He was second in both the 200-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle at the 2018 New England Prep School Championships, and he was third in the 500-yard freestyle and fourth in the 200-yard butterfly at the YMCA Short Course National Championships. In long course, Farricker made five finals at the YMCA National Championships, finishing second in the 400-meter IM.

Glass will add depth to an already stacked butterfly training group. She is the Ohio High School Division I record-holder in the 100-yard butterfly, winning back-to-back state titles in 2017 and 2018. At the 2018 YMCA Short Course National Championships, Glass won both the 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard butterfly, was third in the 200-yard freestyle and seventh in the 200-yard IM. In long course, Glass won the 50-meter butterfly, 100-meter butterfly and was second in both the 200-meter butterfly and 200-meter freestyle at the YMCA Long Course National Championships.

Hansen also primarily specializes in the springboard events. She qualified on one-meter for the 2018 USA Diving Junior National Championships, finishing 16th (16-18 Girls) and was a finalist on both one- and three-meter at the 2018 USA Diving Zone C Championships (16-18 Girls). Hansen finished fourth on both one-meter and three-meter (16-18 Girls) and won synchronized three-meter (14-18 Girls) at the 2018 USA Diving Junior Region 6 Championships.

Hogan is the platform diver of the class. She made the final on platform in back-to-back years at the USA Diving National Championships, finishing 10th in 2016 (14-15 Girls) and 11th in 2017 (16-18 Girls). At the 2018 USA Diving Junior World Championships Trials, she was a finalist in three events: finishing 10th on both platform and three-meter, and finishing fifth in synchronized three-meter. Hogan also won three-meter and platform at the 2018 USA Diving Junior Region 8 Championships.

Kudryashova is a fast-improving freestyle swimmer. As a sophomore, Kudryashova was second in the 100-yard freestyle and third in the 200-yard freestyle at the 2017 NJSIAA State Swimming and Diving Championships. She’s dropped time in long-course swimming, placing second in both the 200-meter freestyle and 400-meter freestyle at the 2018 USA Swimming Futures Championship in Richmond, and won the 200-meter freestyle, finaling in three other events at the 2018 Speedo Champions Series – North (Buffalo).

Peel is an up-and-coming sprinter and the only in-state signee of the class. Swimming with Spring Lake High School, Peel is an eight-time all-state selection and holds four MHSAA Division 3 state records. Last year as a junior, he became state champion in the 100-yard freestyle and took third in the 50-yard freestyle. In long course, he set personal-best times in the 100-meter freestyle and 200-meter freestyle at the Speedo Champions Series (Akron) back in March.

Sims is one of the best distance freestyle swimmers in the entire class. A member of the 2018-19 U.S. Junior National Team, she represented the United States at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in October, and finished fifth in the 400-meter freestyle and seventh in the 800-meter freestyle. Sims is the back-to-back UIL Texas 6A State champion in the 500-yard freestyle. Nationally, she was third in the 400-meter freestyle, fifth in the 400-meter IM and seventh in the 200-meter freestyle at the 2018 Speedo Junior National Championships.

Tang follows in the footsteps of fellow Hong Kong natives Siobhán Haughey and Jamie Yeung, both of whom will graduate after this year. Tang is a versatile freestyle swimmer, but specializes in the distance and mid-distance events. At this past summer’s Asian Games in Indonesia, Tang won a bronze medal as part of Hong Kong’s 4×200-meter freestyle relay, while placing seventh in the 1,500-meter freestyle and eighth in the 400-meter freestyle. She’s represented Hong Kong on the international stage since her first appearance at the 2015 FINA Junior World Championships.

Trepanier adds more speed and will likely slot into the sprint group. He is a two-time MSHSL Boys AA state champion, winning the 50- and 100-yard freestyles last year as a junior. As a sophomore, he was state runner-up in the 50-yard freestyle and took third in the 100-yard butterfly. In long course, he was 11th in the 50-meter freestyle and 22nd in the 100-meter freestyle at the 2017 Summer Junior National Championships.

Wright is the most versatile swimmer in the class. As a freshman at Attleboro High School, he was second in the 100-yard backstroke and fourth in the 200-yard IM at the Massachusetts D-I State Championships. Wright qualified for the 2018 Phillips 66 National Championships in five events, finishing as high as 23rd in the 200-meter IM and making the 18-and-under final in the 200-meter butterfly. The following week at the Speedo Junior National Championships, he was third in the 100-meter butterfly.

The backstroker of the class, Yarian was the IHSAA Boys Swimming/Diving Championships runner-up in the 100-yard backstroke last year as a junior. He also took fourth in the 100-yard butterfly and contributed legs for Carroll’s 200-yard medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay. He was eighth in the 100-meter backstroke at the 2018 Speedo Junior National Championships.
