Michigan Men Beat Purdue; Women Take Down EMU and Ohio

The University of Michigan swim teams each raced at home Friday, with the men taking down Purdue 184.5 to 113.5 in a Big Ten dual meet while the women beat both Eastern Michigan (227-70) and Ohio University (221-86). Michigan’s men were led by double winners Eduardo Moraes, Wyatt Davis and Jared Daigle, while freshman Katie Crom and senior diver Lucy Hogan came up big for the Michigan women. The meet was Michigan’s first competition since honoring former teammate Ian Miskelley at the “Be Better” Invitational two weeks ago.

Moraes completed the distance sweep for the Wolverines as he took first in the 1000 freestyle (9:17.59) and 500 free (4:28.05), while Davis was a winner in the 100 backstroke (47.35) and 100 butterfly (47.36). Daigle won the 200 free (1:46.78) and 400 IM (3:52.33). Bence Szabados won the 50 free for the Wolverines in 19.64, while Ansel Froass captured the 200 breast win in 1:59.87 and Cameron Gammage won 1-meter diving (349.80). Davis, Brendan FitzpatrickGal Cohen Groumi and Szabados won the 200 medley relay in 1:27.05, and Szabados, Nikola Acin, Cohen Groumi and Cam Peel secured the 400 free relay win in 2:55.73.

Winners for the Purdue men included Nick Sherman in the 200 free (1:37.87), Coleman Modglin in the 100 breast (55.09), Skyler Younkin in the 200 fly (1:48.88), Brady Samuels in the 100 free (43.27) and Sam Bennett in 3-meter diving (332.80).

On the women’s side, Crom got her hand on the wall first in the 200 free (1:49.85) and 400 IM (4:22.93), while Hogan put up impressive scores in 3-meter (334.35) and 1-meter (282.30) diving. Eight other Michigan swimmers claimed individual wins: Mariella Venter (100 back, 56.51), Devon Kitchel (200 fly, 2:02.13), Brady Kendall (50 free, 23.45), Malia Amuan (100 free, 51.23), Noelle Kaufmann (200 back, 2:02.98), Kathryn Ackerman (200 breast, 2:20.19) and Riley Francis (500 free, 4:56.82).

A showdown between two Michigan teams in the 200 medley relay saw the B-squad of Venter, AckermanLindsay Flynn and Kendall beating out the A-team of Casey Chung, Kitchel, Noelle Kaufmann and Claire Newman by just one hundredth, 1:42.43 to 1:42.44. But the 400 free relay was no contest as Riley Francis, Flynn, Ella Piersma and Megan Glass won convincingly in 3:23.03.

EMU’s Savs Mouat finished first in the 1000 free (10:21.04), while Ohio got wins from Ami Hornyak in the 100 breast (1:03.02) and Gabrielle Brust in the 100 fly (55.07).
