Michael Phelps to Speak About Mental Health at Southern Connecticut State
NEW HAVEN — Michael Phelps — the most decorated Olympian in history with 28 medals in various swimming events – will discuss his storied career and his challenges with depression and anxiety on March 29 at Southern Connecticut State University.
He will be the featured speaker at the Mary and Louis Fusco Distinguished Lecture at 7 p.m. in the Lyman Center for the Performing Arts. It marks the 21st edition in this annual lecture series. The talk will be part of a conversational interview with sports journalist Kate Fagan. Tickets are sold out.
Earlier that day, SCSU will host a televised panel discussion on student mental health challenges and resources. The program, “Student Mental Health: Crucial Conversations,” is scheduled for 1 to 2:30 p.m., also in the Lyman Center. The event is free and open to the public. It will be aired at 8 p.m. April 18 on CPTV.
The panel includes: Fagan, author of the best-selling, “What Made Maddy Run: the Secret Struggles and Tragic Death of an All-American Teen;” Marc Brackett, director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence; Nick Pinkerton, director of counseling services at Southern; Miriam Delphin-Rittmon, commissioner of the state Department of Mental Health & Addiction Services; and Jermaine Wright, associate vice president for student affairs at Southern.

More men and athletes should pay attention. Hopefully, Michael Phelps will encourage people to take care of themselves. The devastation left to family and friends is overwhelming. Congrats to Michael for having the courage!!!
