Michael Phelps told the media Sunday night that he is scratching the 200 free Monday morning. Phelps was the gold medalist in the event at the 2008 Olympic Games and remains the American record-holder in the event at 1:42.96.
Phelps plans to make his Olympic Trials debut Tuesday in the 200 fly.
Even though he will not be among the top six qualifiers that head to Rio in the event, Phelps still could be included on the 800 free relay at the Olympic Games if the coaching staff (led by Phelps’ personal coach, Bob Bowman) decides he merits a spot. Bowman said in a press conference Saturday that Phelps would deserve consideration if he is in Rio and swimming well.
