Michael Phelps Racing Only One Day at Arena Grand Prix in Charlotte
CHARLOTTE, North Carolina, May 6. MICHAEL Phelps’ comeback campaign continues next week at the Arena Grand Prix in Charlotte, N.C., where he’s entered in two events on the same day, according to an article by The Associated Press.
Bob Bowman told the AP Monday that Phelps is scheduled to race the 100 fly and 200 free, both of which fall on the second day of the meet. Bowman said Phelps might only swim one of the races, but hinted that the 200 free could be the priority in Charlotte.
“We were encouraged by his performances in Mesa and look forward to trying a 200 in Charlotte,” Bowman told the AP.
Two weeks ago at the Arena Grand Prix in Mesa, Phelps also had a double-event lineup on one day, but dropped the 100 free to focus on the 100 fly. Phelps finished second in the 100 fly with a 52.13 behind Ryan Lochte’s 51.93.
If Phelps swims the 200 free, it would mark his first freestyle race since coming out of retirement. He only swam butterfly in Mesa, doing that stroke in the 50 freestyle event and finishing outside of the top 40.
