While Michael Phelps has taken on (and beaten) his fair share of competitors throughout his storied career, the Olympic legend apparently isn’t done making history. While we reported Phelps was set to participate in “Shark Week” back in March, in a story featured in The Washington Post it was revealed that Phelps plans to race a great white shark in this year’s week of programming on the Discovery Channel.
In a press release from the Discovery Channel the cable channel reveals the segment will be titled “Phelps vs. Shark: Great Gold vs. Great White” and will feature Phelps at the Bimini Shark Lab located in the Bahamas. While it is unclear how exactly Phelps will be racing the great white shark, those who tune in can expect to see researchers from the Shark Lab teaching Phelps about everything shark-related, including clearing up many common myths about predatory fish.
Phelps himself posted a picture of a great white earlier this week on his Instagram account, saying he fulfilled a lifelong dream of diving with a great white in a shark cage.
Shark Week is an annual week-long installment of programming exclusively from the Discovery Channel, and Phelps’ segment is scheduled to be aired on July 23rd at 8pm EST. You can read about additional programming during the week in the press release from the Discovery Channel here.
