Michael Phelps Clinches Top Seed In 200 Fly Prelims At USA Nationals
Michael Phelps controlled prelims of the men’s 200-meter fly with a top time of 1:55.15 at USA Nationals, after entering the meet as the eighth-fastest seed. His heavily anticipated return to USA Nationals marks another step on his comeback trail towards Rio in 2016. He dropped 2.47 seconds from his prelims time to clinch the top slot heading into finals.
Phelps’s time would have placed him third in prelims at the FINA World Championships in Kazan behind Laszlo Cseh and Viktor Bromer. Phelps demonstrated composure in his splits, and should see another drop tonight.
Phelps: 25.92/28.93/29.82/30.48
Jack Conger took second with a 1:56.19, and was followed by Pace Clark’s 1:57.39. Clark Smith (1:57.59) and Dakota Hodgson (1:58.38) took fourth and fifth, respectively. The top seed entering the meet Andrew Seliskar ended prelims sixth in 1:58.58. Carlos Peralta Gallego (1:58.81) and John Martens (1:58.82) rounded out the top eight.
The B Final will include Christian McCurdy (1:58.84), Sam McHugh (1:58.84), Gunnar Bentz (1:58.85), Cameron Brodie (1:58.90), Adam Hinshaw (1:58.99), Zach Harting (1:59.09), Thomas Luchsinger (1:59.13), and Justin Lynch (1:59.31).
