Michael Phelps Blasts 42.17 in 100 Free Exhibition

AUSTIN – Michael Phelps served as the warm-up act for the third night in a row at the American Short Course Championships in Austin.
On night one, Michael Phelps unofficially moved to seventh on the all-time list in the 200-yard IM with a 1:40.84.
Last night, he unofficially broke into the top 10 all time in the 100 fly with a 44.91.
Tonight, he unofficially clocked his second-fastest 100-yard freestyle time ever with a 42.17.
He split the race: 9.59, 20.28, 31.39, 42.17
That’s just off his personal best of 41.93 from the 2008 Toyota Grand Prix that nearly ranks him among the top 20 of all time.
All of these times are unofficial because Phelps has yet to finish his six-month suspension following his DUI arrest.
Michael Phelps will be done with his DUI suspension and have his first official swims next month at the Arena Pro Swim Series in Mesa, Ariz.
USA Swimming made some news recently as Executive Director Chuck Wielgus told ESPN that there might be a path for Phelps to regain a spot on Team USA for the World Championships this summer. Following his DUI arrest, Phelps withdrew from the meet that will take place after the conclusion of his six-month competition ban.
Hey Tony Owens, move on and stop espousing your hatred! If you don’t have something good to say, don’t say anything at all!
congratulations to Michael.. Wait till he’s shaved and tapered..
Or, sober.
Ouch. That wasn’t necessary, was it? It’s in the past now. He’s a swimmer that’s made some not-so-great decisions, but he’s still the greatest of all time.
Still “The Man” in the pool!!
Ah-mazing!!!!
I got my 50M free under 40 seconds and thought I was going good !!!
Way to go!!!
I love MP

100 yard not 100 meters !
he is so amazing
As Hays said when we were kids, “how low can it go?”-at some point without changing the rules or conditions (waveless lanelines) there’s gotta be a limit, no?
The boy has quick turns.
Why? What respect has he shown young swimmers who looked up to him, to the US Olympic team, to his home team, his parents and coaches. Just another idolized jerk like Ray Rice, A Rod, Pete Rose, Lance Armstrong…and the list goes on!!!!
Pretty sure ppl nowadays are quite well informed and educated abt wt is right and wrong, and in this context swimmers respect Phelps for his consistent hard work and outstanding performance. “Making a bad example, bad idol blah blah blah” is an utter underestimation of our perception of right and wrong, as well as a rejection to a sportsman who has dedicated so many hours in this area

Good on ya Chris Cheng and on point!
So you’re lumping Phelps in the same group of uber corrupt elite athletes that includes domestic abuse, illegal PED use, gambling, serial lying and character assassination? Pu-lease!
Drunk driving (and repeated offenses, no less) is much, much worse than “gambling” and “character assassination”
Actually, everything in that list except for domestic abuse
…..and…no one cares! LOSER!!
Actually, a lot of people care, that’s why there is an article in swimming world. Forgive him for a lapse in judgement.
Show some respect man
Chris Cheng you’re a legend
Lots of Americans care and losers don’t win gold medals for their country as an amateur athlete.

Why is he in the pool … No respect!!!! He needs to be taught tough love , does he realizes that kids look up to him ? Rules are rules !!!! He should. Not be near a pool . He needs to pay for his mistakes. What are we teaching our kids , break rules and you get away with it ?
people now are so quick to judge, faster than they are willing to understand. we shud be happy when we see people that trying hard to go on the right way of there lives or trying to make things right with her/his self and showing us the will and courage to be a better person, some people like him some are not, but for those who still doubting him, why not give it a try to open a liitle bit more of your heart to this guy, lets give him one more chance.
and offcourse as parent you are protected and concern of your children, but as i believe being a good person starts frm home not frm sch or outside, or frm what we see outside, its all start in our home.. you are the most responsible of your kids…. peace out evryone.
Yes, Michael is a human being. Regardless of how great an athlete, regard of gold medals and world records, he is flawed. He is flawed like all of us. The fact that he made a bad decision makes him even greater in my mind. Makes him even more human.
