Michael Phelps, Allison Schmitt To Swim Exhibition Races at ASU, U of A Dual Meet
Future Arizona State assistant coach Michael Phelps and training partner Allison Schmitt are two headliners who will compete in exhibition races that will take place as part of the Arizona State vs. Arizona dual meet in a week.
Slated for February 6th at 1 p.m. in Tempe, Ariz., Arizona State head coach Bob Bowman will be providing exhibition race opportunities for Phelps, Schmitt, local Olympians, local Olympic hopefuls as well as potentially some of Arizona’s post-grad swimmers as well.
This isn’t the first time Bowman and Phelps have used this tactic to add some spice to a dual meet. The two previously had Phelps engage in exhibition swims during dual meets while the duo were in Ann Arbor, Mich., as part of Club Wolverine and the Michigan Wolverines.
This time, however, there likely won’t be as much consternation from their opponent as previously had occurred when Phelps swam exhibitions against Northwestern and Indiana on Jan. 21 and Jan. 22, 2005.
Following a close 158.5 to 141.5 loss to Michigan, Indiana questioned whether Phelps’ exhibition swims were an NCAA violation to have a professional swimmer competing at any point in time during a collegiate event.
It was decided that Phelps’ swims by himself during breaks in the dual meet were no different than if a professional basketball player had a dunking exhibition during halftime of a basketball game. As long as Phelps did not exhibition during a collegiate race, Michigan was fine.
The Arizona State meet will take place at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center.
