Michael Juengel Breaks Record, Wando Sweeps South Carolina 5A State Championships

The SCHSL 5A State Championships took place on October 6 at the University of South Carolina’s natatorium. The meet was highlighted by Riverside’s Michael Juengel breaking his own 5A record in the boys’ 100 back and Wando High School sweeping the team results.

Girls Meet

Spartanburg’s Sophia Kannee, Sarah Byers, Annika McEnroe and Kirsti McEnroe began the meet with a close win in the 4×50 medley relay (1:46.09). The same quartet concluded the meet with a 4×100 free victory (3:31.96).

Riverside’s Emily Horomanski, Paris Christie, Katy Rose Snover and Hannah Ownbey won the 4×50 medley relay by just over a second in 1:37.01. Horomanski, who is committed to swim at South Carolina next fall, defended her 100 fly (55.23) crown.

Ownbey repeated as 200 IM champion by nearly five seconds in 2:02.72 in addition to being earning gold in the 100 breast (1:03.42). JL Mann’s Lauren Murray (5:06.25) out-touched Wade Hampton’s Audra McSharry (5:06.41) in a tight 500 free battle while Fort Mill senior Erynn Black cruised to first in the 100 back (56.70) to successfully defend her title.

Aubrey Chandler of Fort Mill sprinted to a 50 free win in 23.58 for the second-straight year, just ahead of Berkeley’s Sarah Mundy (23.85) as the only swimmers under the 24-second barrier. Chandler also won the 100 free (51.00) ahead of K. McEnroe (51.77). Freshman K. McEnroe won the 200 free by nearly a full second in 1:51.75 ahead of Wando’s Gabi Reed (1:52.74).

Boys Meet

Wando’s CJ Hills, Cameron Mehta, Matthew Gush and Davis Caldwell opened the boys’ meet with another close 4×50 medley relay win (1:38.87). Hills then went on to win the 50 free in 21.60, three-tenths ahead of runner-up Chad Waldrop (21.90) of West Ashley. Gush won the 500 free (4:42.18).

Riverside senior Juengel, who is headed off to Purdue next fall, dominated the 200 free by winning the event by five seconds in 1:41.97. He also defended his 100 back title in 50.12, breaking his own meet record of 50.40 he set at this meet last year.

Lexington’s JJ Hardy flew to victory in the 100 fly (50.45) while Fort Mill’s Tyler Blackwell (51.30) finished second. JL Mann’s Bruce Bannister (58.33) won the 100 breast followed by Mehta (59.54) as the only two swimmers in the field to crack one-minute. Riverside’s Christopher Meier won a close 200 IM (1:55.25) over Irmo’s Nathan Williams (1:55.37).

It was another close battle in the 4×50 medley relay with Riverside’s Juengel, Meier, Cope Viney and Kai Van den Bosch emerging as champions. The same group of four concluded the meet with a seven-second 4×100 free relay win (3:13.87).
