The California Golden Bears got a big verbal commitment in the form of sprinter Michael Jensen, one this season’s top recruits who could become the next big freestyle star for Dave Durden’s team.

Jensen will have a familiar face to help in the transition to the California Bay Area. Former Upper Dublin Aquatic Club teammate Michael Thomas is currently a freshman there, and might have been a major influence in Jensen’s college choice.

Jensen had a summer to remember at the junior world championships, where he was part of the runner-up 400 free relay team in Singapore. He was only part of the one event at the meet, and his 49.90 prelim split marked his first time under 50 seconds in the 100 free – albeit from a relay takeoff.

In short course yards, Jensen is on the cusp of breaking 20 seconds in the 50 free with a lifetime best of 20.20. He swam that at last December’s junior nationals, where he finished in a tie for fifth. He did a bit better in the 100 free, placing fourth with a best time of 43.95. His 200 free is stellar as well, and whether he swims it individually or not, look for Jensen to contribute to Cal’s 800 free relay. With a 1:35.31 as a lifetime best, he should be able to contribute immediately.

Jensen also has potential in the 100 fly with a best time of 47.41, giving him a strong option for a third event at the college championship meets.

Jensen goes into the Pennsylvania high school championships as the reigning 100 and 200 freestyle champion.
