In prelims of the 100 breaststroke this morning at the US Olympic Trials 17 year old Michael Andrew broke his own National Age Group record and the World Junior Record.

He stopped the clock in 59.96, clearing the minute barrier for the first time in his career. He took the World Junior mark from Anton Chupkov who posted a 1:00.12 in August.

Just last weekend in this very pool, Andrew broke the National Age Group record in prelims and in finals. In the morning he was a 1:00.46, just .01 slower than Kevin Cordes‘ record, and at night he clocked a 1:00.37.

Andrew will be fifth in tonight’s semifinal.

As for the rest of his morning’s semifinals qualifiers, Cordes posted the fastest time of the morning with a 59.05. That swim moves him to second in the world this year. He sat outside the top 20 before that.

Cody Miller swam a 59.33 for the second seed. Andrew Wilson was the first swimmer of the morning to crack a minute, with a 59.76 to win the first circle seeded heat. That time makes him the third seed for semifinals tonight in a tie with Josh Prenot.

Marcus Titus (1:00.44), Brendan McHugh (1:00.46), and Will Licon (1:00.50) are sixth through eighth.

Nic Fink (1:00.58) will return ninth. Alex Evdokimov and Ian Finnerty tied for tenth (1:01.14).

Sam Tierney (1:01.15), Reece Whitley (1:01.20), Connor Hoppe (1:01.38), Brandon Fiala (1:01.40), and Chuck Katis (1:01.41) also earned second swims.
