Melanie Margalis swam a season best in the 400 IM on Friday morning at the TYR Pro Swim Series in Mission Viejo with a 4:35.18, which is right up there with Yui Ohashi’s world leading swim of 4:35.14 from earlier this week in Japan. Margalis is now second in the world rankings ahead of this summer’s Olympic Trials where she will try to make her second Olympics.
Margalis won ahead of former teammate Hali Flickinger (4:37.55), who led the field through the 200 at 2:13.26 before Margalis split a 1:17 on the third 100. Flickinger held off a back half charge from Madisyn Cox (4:39.10) who was a 1:19 on the third 100 compared to Flickinger’s 1:21. Cox didn’t have the freestyle leg to hold on but she finished ahead of the 2017 national champ Leah Smith (4:40.48) and 2018 national champ Ally McHugh (4:41.68).
NCAA champ Brooke Forde, who is freshly removed from her undergrad career at Stanford, finished in sixth at 4:42.60.
In the men’s race, Cal’s Sean Grieshop leaned in to a 4:16.14 in the 400 IM, which is the fastest any American has been in 2021. Grieshop just finished his career at Cal Berkeley where he was third in this event last month in Greensboro.
Grieshop led from the outset with Jarrod Arroyo in the runner-up spot at 4:18.44, and Florida grad Grant Sanders in third at 4:20.98 ahead of 2019 Pan Ams gold medalist Charlie Swanson (4:21.18).
