Meet of the Week Recap: Wabash Edges Carthage (162-132)
By Jason Marsteller
CRAWFORDSVILLE, Indiana, October 27. AFTER further review of the results, Carthage actually beat Wabash on the swimming side of the ledger, 132-130, while Wabash still wound up with a 162-132 overall win when adding 32 unchecked diving points. Previously, Wabash had reported four point-scoring swimmers in the 100 fly, as the final fifth-place point should have gone to Carthage. The change still did not change the fact that Wabash wound up with a win.
Carthage's triumvirate of Kyle Drake, Bryan Pelka and Stephen Schranck had enough in the tank to give Wabash all it could handle in the pool as the trio accounted for seven of Carthage's eight titles. Schranck captured the 100 breast (59.35), 200 breast (2:09.17) and 200 IM (1:58.12) to lead all swimmers with three titles. His 200 breast time eclipsed his own pool record.
Meanwhile, Drake swept the backstroke events with wins in the 100 (54.40) and 200 (1:56.47). Additionally, Pelka owned the distance events with wins in the 500 (4:51.81) and 1000 (9:56.32) freestyle events, with a pool record in the longer distance event. Carthage's final event title came in the 400 freestyle relay when Andy Bax (49.07), Nathan Ripley (48.68), Jeff Walkotten (49.46) and Bryce Davis (47.62) stopped the clock in 3:14.83.
Wabash, on the other hand, held its own with four titles from a pair of swimmers in Daniel Michael and Adam Petro. Michael claimed wins in the 50 (21.40) and 100 (48.46) free, while Petro swept the butterfly events with triumphs in the 100 (52.85) and 200 (1:56.15). Jordon Blackwell added a 200 free title in 1:49.52, while divers Cole Hatcher (1m – 224.80) and Robert Fenoglio (3m – 230.90) earned the springboard wins. Additionally, Zach Phillips, Evan Rhinesmith, Petro and Michael won the 200 medley relay in 1:37.68.
