Matthew Willenbring Serves 4-Month Suspension for Positive Test
Matthew Willenbring tested positive for a banned substance on August 28, 2017, and was sanctioned to a four-month suspension, FINA announced this week.
The suspension began on October 19, 2017, and has since expired.
But Willenbring was forced to give up all of his results from the 2017 World Junior Championships, including the gold medal in the 4×100 medley relay that Team USA won. That means the rest of the relay must vacate gold as well.
The Texas commit also won a medal in the 100 free and 4×100 free relay at the 2017 World Junior Championships.
The FINA official decision:
“On 28 August 2017, Mr. Matthew Willenbring (USA) was tested positive during the FINA World Junior Championships in Indianapolis (USA) for the substance Hydrochlorothiazide (Class S5 Diuretics and Masking Agents). Mr. Matthew Willenbring was sanctioned with a four (4) month ineligibility period in accordance with FINA DC Rule 10.5.1.1. The sanction started on 19 October 2017, the day his voluntary provisional suspension commenced. All results achieved by Mr. Matthew Willenbring from 28 August 2017 shall be annulled together with the consequence thereof (forfeiture of medals/prizes, reimbursement of prize-money).”
That schalorship should have disappeared as well!
If you knew the full story, you wouldn’t feel this way.

Is there a full story to read somewhere?

You ought to be ashamed of yourselves for publishing an article like this about a high schooler without also publishing the details of the FINA reasoning for the actual findings (which are in the public domain) and the small suspension. Clearly the incident was accidental, at least according to FINA’s review of the evidence, as you can see if you read SWIM SWAM. Thankfully they published the complete story so people can at least judge both sides fro themselves.
This is irresponsible “journalism” at its worst.
Terrible judgement on publishing this article without stating the FINA review of the evidence showing a clear accidental taking of a blood pressure medicine that is typically taken to decrease body weight. An apology should be in order for this high school child from you.
if you knew the whole story your opinion would be different
This kid was definitely NOT trying to lose weight.
I agree with you Scott
Look at all comments and you wouldn’t feel the same way!
That’s a blood pressure medicine!! Wow ridiculous
How misleading is this?!?
