Matthew Knox Will Become a Blue Devil With Verbal to Duke
NEW COMMIT: Versatile Matthew Knox of Springfield, Ill. has given his verbal commitment to Duke University and will join the Blue Devils in the fall of 2019.
Knox does his club swimming with the Springfield YMCA Swim Team and has met the Winter Juniors qualifying standard in the 200m free. He achieved 100% lifetime bests and had six second-swims at Rochester Futures this summer which included a bronze medal in the 200m free. He placed fifth in the 100 free and 13th in the 200 free at YMCA Nationals in April and notched three personal bests at Illinois YMCA States in March. He also represented Springfield High School at the Illinois State Championships during his freshman and sophomore seasons.
He told Swimming World:
“I am extremely honored and excited to announce that I will continue my academic and athletic career at Duke University! A special thank you to everyone who has helped me along the way – coaches, friends, teachers, family – can’t wait to be a Blue Devil!”
His best times include:
- 200 free – 1:40.09
- 500 free – 4:35.98
- 1650 free – 16:01.88
- 100 fly – 50.96
- 200 IM – 1:53.92

When he arrives in Durham as a member of the class of 2023, Knox will join a freestyle group that includes fellow future classmate Brendan Driscoll as well as an IM squad led by Cole Reznick. Although he currently sits just outside scoring range at the ACC Championships, Knox will aim to translate his summer success with another year of club swimming still to go before suiting up for the Blue Devils.
